UE4 Support Will Remain On iOS, Judge Rules

Epic Games has achieved at least one small victory in its fight against Apple. As you’ll recall, Epic put a special deal for V-Bucks in Fortnite on the iOS App Store, bypassing Apple’s 30% cut of all transactions. In response, Apple booted Fortnite from its store, and also vowed to remove support for Epic’s Unreal Engine 4, as well, by Aug. 28.

It was that last part that threatened to impact more than just Epic Games, as it stood to affect the countless devs on the App Store who used UE4 and relied on its continued support to keep their games updated. Fortunately for them, a California judge has blocked at least this part of Apple’s actions against Epic, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.

“Apple has chosen to act severely, and by doing so, has impacted non-parties, and a third-party developer ecosystem,” U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers ruled.

So score one for Epic, as well as many smaller developers, though the larger battle against Apple is still underway, with an uncertain conclusion. While this matter was resolved quickly, as it had to be given the Aug. 28 deadline, I have a feeling that the main focus of the conflict will drag on for quite some time.
