On this day, seventeen years ago, the Star Wars franchise got the RPG game that fans have been waiting for for years.
Star Wars games until this century mostly belonged to the genres of shooters and action games. But exactly 17 years ago, the creators of the Baldur’s Gate series seized a unique opportunity and delivered us a Star Wars game of the RPG genre. Full name Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, this title took us long before the action of the films themselves - almost four thousand years before the creation of the Galactic Empire.
Interestingly, BioWare came up with the idea by refusing to work on a game that would follow Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones. Working at KOTOR allowed them more creative freedom, and they took advantage of that in the best possible way. To this day, KOTOR remains the first choice when it comes to the RPG genre in the world of Star Wars.
It is an interesting fact that KOTOR was never available on the then most popular console, the PlayStation 2. Instead, it came out first on the Xbox and then on the PC. Subsequently, in 2013, it received a mobile edition for iOS and in 2014 for Android. The game received a sequel to The Sith Lords in 2004, directed by another team, and since 2011 its legacy bears the MMO title Star Wars: The Old Republic.

More recently, the original KOTOR can be played on the Xbox One console for which the game is also graphically embellished with the help of emulation charms. It is also mentioned that KOTOR could be a template for a new trilogy of films in the Star Wars franchise.
